A widespread rain and snowfall expected across the upcountry from this weekend, the Met Office said on Friday. It said that a westerly wave is likely to enter the western parts of the country on Saturday and may grip the most parts on Sunday. The new weather system is expected unleash widespread rain and snowfall from Sunday through Wednesday in the upper parts of the country. A light rain is also expected in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Bahawalpur and Multan Divisions on Sunday.

With a few moderate to isolated heavy falls, the rainy weather is expected to prevail over Malakand, Hazara, Peshawar, Mardan, Kohat, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sargodha, Faisalabad and Sahiwal Divisions, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir from Sunday to Wednesday.

Snowfall of a moderate to heavy intensity is likely over the hills in Swat, Chitral, Kalam, Malamjabba and Upper Dir, Murree and Galliyat, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, besides Hazara Division over the period. Scattered rain is expected in Quetta, Zhob, Kalat, Makran, D I Khan, Bannu, and D G Khan Divisions from Saturday evening until Sunday.

The Met alerted the authorities to avalanches and landslides from a moderate to heavy rain with snowfall in Malakand and Hazara Division, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir from Monday to Wednesday. All the concerned authorities, it said, should remain alert to the climatic events.

In the next 24 hours: Mainly cold and dry weather is expected in the most parts of the country. However, isolated rain with snowfall over the hills is likely in Quetta, Zhob, Kalat, Makran, Malakand, Hazara, Peshawar, Kohat and Rawalpindi Divisions, Islamabad, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. In the last 24 hours: A very cold and dry weather gripped the most parts of the country. Minimum temperature was recorded in Bagrote as minus 13 degrees Celsius, Astore and Gupis minus 10, each, Kalam and Skardu minus 9, each, Hunza minus 7, Dir, Gilgit and Malamjabba minus 3, each, Chitral, Parachinar, Drosh and Rawalakot minus 2, each and Kakul minus 1.
